Utility-scale solar led US power additions this year
New US generating capacity is coming from a mix of solar fields, battery sites and gas plants. Utility-scale solar added 11,458 megawatts of generating capacity this year, more than any other category, while batteries added 8,207 megawatts. Onshore wind followed at 5,473 megawatts.
The gas buildout is arriving more slowly than its development pipeline suggests. Natural-gas combustion turbines accounted for 22 projects, internal-combustion engines for 21, and combined-cycle gas for just 3 projects that went online. Together, the three largest gas categories added 2,707 megawatts of capacity.
That contrast matters because the solar total is not one giant plant. Eric Gimon, a senior fellow at Energy Innovation, told Ars Technica that the bulk of new projects are small and mid-size utility-scale solar installations. Many are paired with batteries, and their smaller size makes them easier to build across a wider range of sites.
The buildout is also geographically concentrated. Texas, New Mexico and Arizona account for about half of the country’s new generating capacity. Texas led with 3,067 megawatts of batteries, 2,311 megawatts of utility-scale solar, and 1,154 megawatts from gas combustion turbines or internal-combustion engines.
So what changes, concretely? The US is adding more flexible storage alongside solar, while developers continue to prepare a later wave of gas plants. That does not make the technologies interchangeable: solar produces no power at night, and some gas plants run only a few days or weeks a year when needed to meet peak demand. The figures also exclude small-scale solar, including rooftop systems.
