On the former Coalburn mining site in South Lanarkshire, near Glasgow, the machinery has taken on a new role. Coalburn 1 is beginning commercial operations as Europe’s largest operational battery, with 500 MW of power and 1 GWh of storage capacity.

At full power, the facility can provide backup electricity or adjust output for around two hours. Its role is to respond to fluctuations in the British grid, as renewable energy accounts for a growing share of generation but does not produce continuously. Construction began in late 2023.

The site is only the first part of a programme being developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) in Scotland. Coalburn 2 is to be built at the same location with equivalent capacity, while Devilla is planned near Fife. Together, the three batteries would provide 1.5 GW of power and 3 GWh of storage, according to information published about the programme.

CIP sold 50% of Coalburn 1 to insurer Axa IM Alts in 2025. RES, a renewable energy specialist, is handling its operational management. The project also has a ten-year optimisation contract with SSE and a fifteen-year capacity agreement guaranteeing the availability of 300 MW.

So what does this mean in practice? The British grid now has a new tool for providing backup electricity or adjusting output when renewable generation fluctuates. For consumers, the three projects are presented as potentially improving the system’s resilience and reducing costs, but Coalburn 2 and Devilla are still to come: only Coalburn 1 has begun commercial operations.
