Amylyx experimental drug cuts serious blood sugar events in Phase 3

A sudden blood sugar crash can end with a person losing consciousness or having a seizure. In a Phase 3 trial, Amylyx Pharmaceuticals said its experimental drug cut serious low blood sugar events by 55% compared with placebo in people who developed the condition after bariatric surgery.

The condition is known as post-bariatric hypoglycemia, or PBH. It causes sudden drops in blood sugar after weight-loss surgery, and the most severe episodes can become medical emergencies. For people living with PBH, the difference between a serious event and no event is practical: fewer episodes that can put them and their families in an emergency situation.

The result also beat the study’s statistical benchmark. The trial was designed to show a 35% improvement over placebo; the reduction reported by Amylyx was larger. STAT quoted Amylyx co-CEO Justin Klee as saying that any reduction would be meaningful, while describing the size of the effect as especially encouraging.

And so what, concretely? If the result supports a potential approval, people with PBH could eventually have a treatment specifically aimed at reducing serious low blood sugar events. Amylyx said the data pave the way for possible approval as the first treatment for the condition.

The limit is the stage. These are results from a Phase 3 study, and the drug remains experimental: the source describes a potential approval, not an approved treatment or one already in routine use.
