Portland airport adds overhead charging for up to 20 rental EVs

A row of charging stations on the floor would compete with rental cars for room at Portland International Airport. Instead, 10 dual-port fast chargers now hang above the vehicles at the Quick Turnaround Facility (QTA), where cars are cleaned and serviced between customers. Retractable cables come down only when operators need them, allowing the system to charge up to 20 rental EVs at once.

The overhead design keeps both chargers and cables out of the path of cars moving through the busy facility. It also leaves staff more room to maneuver and process vehicles. Jeremiah Hartley, Portland International Airport’s rental car manager, said the installation reduced the conduit and wiring required and helps protect the equipment from potential vehicle damage.

That layout fits the rhythm of an airport rental fleet. Cars have a relatively short window between one customer and the next, so charging during that interval could return an electric vehicle to service sooner. ChargePoint’s fleet software lets operators monitor and troubleshoot the equipment remotely, while managing charging according to when vehicles are needed.

And concretely? PDX now has a way to add charging capacity without giving up more working floor space. For rental companies, the benefit is operational: more vehicles can be plugged in during turnaround, while staff and cars continue moving through the facility. For other airports facing the same space constraint, PDX could become a practical template if the system performs well in everyday rental operations.

The limits are clear. ChargePoint has not disclosed the charging speed of each fast charger, and it has not specified which rental companies will use the installation. The equipment is in place, but the source does not provide operating results or evidence yet that the model has been adopted elsewhere.
