Coconut blend keeps efficiency comparable to Jet A-1 in small turbojet

The small turbojet at Osaka Metropolitan University did not suddenly need a new engine. It ran on blends of coconut-derived fuel and Jet A-1, the conventional aviation fuel used as the benchmark, while researchers watched fuel consumption, thermal efficiency and exhaust emissions.

The team made two biofuels from coconut oil: FAME, produced with methanol, and FAEE, produced with ethanol. A cosolvent process mixes coconut oil extracts with acetone and alcohol, allowing production at ambient temperature and normal pressure. That could reduce the energy required to make the fuel and help maintain its purity.

There was a trade-off. Fuel consumption increased as the share of biofuel rose, which the researchers attributed mainly to differences in the fuels’ heating values. But thermal efficiency remained comparable to Jet A-1. In the same tests, hydrocarbon emissions declined, while carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions showed no significant change.

The possible supply story is regional as much as technical. In Southeast Asia, around 30% of harvested coconuts are discarded because they do not meet commercial standards. That waste could become a feedstock for aviation biofuel and, the researchers say, could help regions vulnerable to disruptions in conventional fuel supplies.

So what, concretely? The result points to a coconut-based blend that could be tested in existing gas-turbine engines without a major loss of efficiency, while reducing one category of exhaust pollutant. It does not yet establish commercial aviation use: the work was conducted in a small turbojet, and the researchers still need to address fuel consumption, long-term storage stability, material compatibility and environmental impacts through life-cycle assessment. They also want to develop technology for engines operating on 100% biofuel.
