Five-week emotion training eases distress and changes brain connectivity
A difficult image no longer held the students’ gaze in quite the same way. After five weeks of emotion-regulation training, college students reported less distress when viewing negative pictures or thinking about painful events in their own lives. Brain scans showed that the change was not only in their answers: the way their brain networks communicated at rest had shifted too.
The program, led by University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign psychologists Sanda and Florin Dolcos with Kelly Hohl of the Phoenix VA Healthcare Center, taught two techniques. In focused attention, students looked away from the most emotionally charged parts of an image and attended to neutral context, such as trees, intact cars or a blue sky in a traffic-accident photograph. In cognitive reappraisal, they practiced finding a more positive interpretation of a difficult scene or memory.
Students completed the exercises twice a week for five weeks, with additional practice encouraged in daily life. Before and after the training, they answered questions about mood, anxiety, worry and potential PTSD symptoms. Most participants in the training group also received resting-state functional MRI scans, which measure how brain regions communicate when a person is awake but not performing a task.
The trained students became more engaged in focused attention and relied less on cognitive reappraisal. They also spent less time looking at emotionally intense areas of images without being prompted. Among the trained students who underwent scans, the scans showed greater connectivity in parts of the prefrontal cortex and a reduction in the sensitivity of regions associated with negative emotions. The researchers described the result as a shift toward more “top-down” processing: deliberate guidance of attention and responses, rather than a response driven mainly by the brain’s emotional systems.
So what, concretely? The study suggests that resilience may be strengthened through repeatable exercises, not treated only as a fixed personal trait. That matters for young adults dealing with academic pressure, social transitions and the stresses of emerging adulthood. But the evidence remains limited to this training study: it shows reduced distress and brain-connectivity changes after the intervention, not a proven therapy for a mental-health diagnosis. The findings extend earlier work in veterans to a different population.
