At the centre of NGC 7129, a young star estimated at five to eight times the mass of the Sun sits within the nebula. The image that NASA released on October 6, 2026, shows what that cloud was keeping out of view: a cluster of stars at different stages of their lives, many of them still wrapped in dust.
NGC 7129 lies about 3,300 light-years from Earth and spans roughly 5.7 light-years, according to TechEBlog. Earlier observations by NASA's retired Spitzer Space Telescope had captured the gas and dust of the region, but the dust hid many of the stars themselves. The James Webb Space Telescope works in the infrared, and its sensitivity lets its instruments see directly through that dust, revealing hundreds of stars, as NASASpaceFlight.com reports. TechTimes counts more than 130 young stars inside the cluster, most under one million years old, and attributes Webb's sharper view to its 6.5-metre primary mirror.

The picture is a composite, and its colours carry meaning. Hot atomic hydrogen, heated until it breaks apart from molecules, appears golden. Cooler molecular hydrogen, shocked by the protostars embedded in the cloud, is shown in red. The image was processed by Alyssa Pagan of the Space Telescope Science Institute, and the agencies have published an interactive tour of the region alongside it.

For astronomers, the value of such a view lies in the mechanism it makes visible. NASA's own description says the region offers an opportunity to explore how stars shape their surrounding environment: the young stars push, heat and clear the gas that surrounds them. The sources do not describe follow-up programmes or a schedule for new data on NGC 7129, so the immediate change is a clearer picture of a region that was partly hidden until now.
The result is a single image, built from one set of observations. It gives no measurement of how long the stars will take to finish forming, and it does not settle the count of stars in the cluster, which the outlets report differently.
