Xiaomi Takes Pack Design In-House for Pengcheng
On the Pengcheng crossover SUV, the battery carries a new name: Longjia. It is the first time Xiaomi has put its own name on a power battery, moving the company beyond the limited cell-design role it held on the earlier SU7 and YU7. The Pengcheng program puts Xiaomi in charge of product definition, pack design and full-process quality control.
The change is backed by people and hardware. Xiaomi has assembled a dedicated battery team of more than 220 staff and operates an in-house pack plant in Yizhuang. The company's supplier choices also change by trim: the standard N70 uses Sunwoda lithium iron phosphate cells, while the N70 Max and N90 Max receive a 76 kWh ternary-lithium pack from CALB, targeting long range. The N70 is described as prioritizing cost and reliability.
The pack separates the BMU, BDU and CMU into isolated compartments. The BDU receives dedicated liquid cooling. Sunwoda and CALB are also willing to tailor cell formats to Xiaomi's two capacity requirements and modify production-line inspection, giving the carmaker more room to shape the battery instead of accepting a standard package from a larger cell maker.
The thermal strategy is different from the SU7's. That vehicle used CATL's Qilin battery, with cells mounted upside down so thermal-runoff gases vented downward through the chassis; the arrangement used 165 sheets and 7.8 square meters of aerogel. Pengcheng mounts its cells conventionally, vents upward and uses mica with multilayer insulation above the pack. The trade is fewer thermal-management innovations in exchange for a simpler cell format that Sunwoda and CALB can produce at scale and at lower cost.
So what changes in practice? For buyers, the Pengcheng range is divided into a cost-and-reliability-focused standard version and higher-spec trims with a 76 kWh pack targeting long range. For Xiaomi, the shift brings battery definition, supplier negotiation and quality control closer to the vehicle program itself. The technology is appearing on a vehicle, but Pandaily's report does not establish the scale of series production; the performance and design claims remain attributed to Xiaomi's program.
