New Suzuki Across offers 129 km electric WLTP range

At the charging station, the Suzuki Across gets a noticeable boost: The new generation accepts three-phase AC at up to 11 kW and can draw DC power at 50 kW. The previous model managed a maximum of just 6.6 kW on a single phase and, in Germany, usually used no more than 4.6 kW because of restrictions on phase imbalance. The next generation of the plug-in hybrid launches in October.

Suzuki is making few changes to the basic concept. The Across takes almost everything from the Toyota RAV4, including its power-split hybrid drive. At the front, a 150-kW electric motor works alongside a 105-kW combustion engine; another electric motor producing up to 40 kW is fitted at the rear. Together, they deliver 227 kW of system output; the top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h.

The 22.7-kWh battery is expected to give the SUV 129 km of electric range according to the WLTP, the standardised European test cycle. Suzuki cites consumption of 16.3 kWh for electric operation. With the battery depleted, the WLTP figure is 5.4 litres of petrol. The manufacturer does not publish a charging time, and the stated figures are initially manufacturer claims.

In practical terms, this means the Across can run without petrol for journeys within its electric range, while faster charging should shorten longer charging stops. Independent tests will have to show whether the 129 km can be achieved in everyday use. The technical progress does, however, come as part of a clearly defined package: the equipment and powertrain cannot be configured, and the list price is €55,490; metallic paint can cost an additional €990.

The market launch is for a model that has so far attracted few buyers: Between autumn 2020 and the end of 2025, fewer than 1,500 Across were registered for the first time in Germany. Suzuki is nevertheless once again betting on the combination of SUV, Toyota hybrid technology and a long electric range. The higher charging power is the specific change most likely to be noticed immediately in daily use.
