Cursor launches Origin to challenge GitHub’s code hosting

According to TechCrunch, GitHub’s functions were reportedly degraded worldwide for more than six hours, with a nearly 20 percent error rate. That was the backdrop as Cursor launched Origin, a new platform for hosting and collaborating on code repositories.

Origin covers the basic workflow developers expect from a code host: storing repositories, browsing and editing code, collaborating on projects, and handling pull requests — edits submitted by one developer for addition to a main codebase. Cursor has said that “agent native” features will soon be available for Origin, although it has not shared many details, and is building a broader app ecosystem around Origin.

The practical difference is that Origin does not demand a clean break with GitHub. Developers can connect a GitHub organization, view eligible repositories, and sync selected projects into Cursor. GitHub repositories and Cursor-hosted repositories can therefore operate alongside one another, with code passed between the services.

That interoperability lets developers keep using GitHub while trying Origin for selected projects. GitHub remains the largest source-code host, with 180 million developers according to its own metrics as of last October. LeadDev’s Charles Humble has also reported 257 outages over the past year, alongside a visible exodus of high-profile users.

So what changes in practice? A development team can keep its existing GitHub repositories while trying Origin for selected projects, then sync code between the two platforms. Cursor’s challenge is still substantial: its platform is new, while GitHub has operated since 2007 and was acquired by Microsoft in 2012. The promised agent-native capabilities may broaden Origin’s role, but those features remain to be defined.
