A syringe given once a week is now at the center of a new treatment option for polycythemia vera, a rare and slow-growing blood cancer. The Food and Drug Administration approved rusfertide for the disease, under the brand name Mimrylo.

Polycythemia vera is chronic: the body produces too many red blood cells. That excess can thicken the blood, raising the risk of life-threatening heart attacks, strokes and blood clots. The approval allows treatment of a condition in which too many red cells circulate in the bloodstream.

Protagonist Therapeutics developed the drug. Takeda, the Japanese pharmaceutical company, will sell it as Mimrylo. The treatment is administered by weekly injection, but the account does not give a price, launch date or clinical-effectiveness figures.

So what changes in practice? Clinicians treating people with polycythemia vera now have an FDA-approved weekly injectable treatment from a drug developed by Protagonist and commercialized by Takeda. The approval is a concrete step for patients with this rare blood cancer, while questions about access, uptake and real-world results remain unanswered in the available reporting.
