Google to add chatbot controls to Discover feeds

A tap on the three-dot menu in Google Discover will soon open something closer to a conversation than a settings page. In a video shared by Google, a chatbot-style interface lets people describe what they want to read; the Google app will then use that request to reshape the feed and remember the preferences for future visits.

The exchange is designed to be adjustable. The chatbot confirms the user’s choices and lays out the types of content it will prioritize. If it gets the request wrong, the user can add more information, then tap “Refresh your feed” to make the changes take effect. Google says the feature will roll out in the app in the coming days.

That matters because Discover currently builds its recommendations from activity across Google Search and Google’s apps. The new tool adds a plain-language instruction layer: instead of relying only on past behavior, readers can tell Google what they want to see. Similar AI-based feed customization tools have also appeared in YouTube, Instagram, Bluesky, and X.

Google is making two related changes. Daily audio briefings in the Google News app on Android will become more personalizable. And Preferred Sources—Google’s feature for showing more of chosen outlets in Search’s “top stories” section, AI Overviews, and AI Mode—will let publishers add an interactive button to their sites so readers can add an outlet without navigating away.

Concretely, the immediate benefit is a faster way to tune a reading feed for people who know what they want but do not want to manage individual settings. The trade-off is that the first instruction may not be interpreted correctly; Google’s design leaves room for users to correct the chatbot before refreshing the feed. Google says the feature will roll out in the coming days.
