Meshy 7 scores image-to-3D fidelity with a new alignment benchmark
A reference image can show a hand, an engraved panel or a precise mechanical curve. A generated 3D model can keep the overall silhouette and still lose all three. Meshy 7, released on August 10, is designed to close that gap, with a new benchmark for measuring how closely an image-to-3D result matches the object behind the image.
Meshy tested the system against four other image-to-3D foundation models using a single input image. Its model scored 81.0% on overall proportion, 79.7% on spatial distribution and 59.8% on surface detail, where a reference model compared with itself represents 100%. No tested system reached 60% on surface detail, and Meshy 7’s score was 5.3 points above the next-closest model.
The test compares generated geometry with reference 3D models that were excluded from training. Each reference is rendered from a known camera position, then reconstructed from the resulting image. Before scoring, outputs can be translated, rotated and uniformly scaled, but their proportions cannot be corrected by stretching one axis. The benchmark therefore checks whether details land in the right places, not merely whether the result forms a workable 3D shape.
Meshy credits the improvement to three changes: an image encoder that works across multiple scales and at higher resolution, training data rebuilt so each sample maps directly to its target geometry, and alignment scoring added during training rather than reserved for evaluation. With four combined views, all tested models improved and came within about two points of each other, while Meshy 7 retained its lead.
So what does this change in practice? For designers and 3D artists, a closer match could mean less remodeling after generation, especially when a reference contains small surface features or precise proportions. But the product is not yet a universal workflow: Ultra Mode supports single-image generation only, multi-view support is planned, downloads require a Pro-tier subscription or higher, and Meshy says its technical geometry and texture reports will be published separately after launch.
