Rocket Lab's GHOST packs launch infrastructure into shipping containers

A traditional orbital launch site is built around a fixed model: large areas of land, significant engineering work, and hardware designed to remain in place for decades. Rocket Lab is proposing the opposite with GHOST, the Global Hypersonic & Orbital Spaceport Technology. The system is designed so that the entire launch capability — rocket stages, ground support, telemetry-tracking units, propellant-loading hardware, flight control systems, and range-safety equipment — can be packed into standard shipping containers.

The rationale is geopolitical as much as commercial. Space traffic is expected to increase exponentially, while more launch companies try to expand existing sites or set up new ones. At the same time, changes in the geopolitical situation and defense interest in hypersonic systems are fueling demand for launch sites that can be installed quickly. For military planners, the ability to set up sites quickly could confuse adversaries, produce less predictable launch angles, make hostile tracking more difficult, and give access to polar or high-inclination orbits.

GHOST benefits from a US$266-million US Space Force contract. The system will first be deployed at Rocket Lab Launch Complex 4 at the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Kodiak, Alaska, with two operational pads and infrastructure that brings Rocket Lab's total to six total pads across both hemispheres. Its scheduled operational debut is a suborbital test flight from Alaska in 2027.

Concretely, what changes is that a launch site could become a more mobile asset rather than a fixed one. A US ally seeking sovereign access to space could theoretically obtain its own ability to launch payloads into orbit without heavy construction costs or a long-term commitment to building and maintaining launch sites. Such a system is designed for both military launches and commercial orbital missions, and it represents a shift from a fixed spaceport to a deployable launch system.

That said, GHOST remains one step away from testing. The only scheduled use described by Rocket Lab is a suborbital test in Alaska in 2027, so the system has not yet demonstrated orbital delivery. The company's market positioning is clear, but the first real containerized activity remains the thing to watch.
