China Opens a QR-Code Supermarket for Frontier Research
A QR code now stands between a company and more than 1,000 frontier research achievements in Shenzhen. At the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, technologies are arranged like products in China’s first technology achievement supermarket: blue for medical devices and scientific instruments, green for AI and robotics, orange for advanced electronics and energy materials, and purple for synthetic biology. Scan a card, and the visitor sees what the technology does, where it might be used and what kind of enterprise could take it further.
The idea tackles a familiar bottleneck in research: companies may need a solution without knowing which laboratory has built it, while research teams may struggle to find an industrial partner. SIAT’s supermarket brings the two sides into the same process. 10 research institutes, 4 national key laboratories and 2 national innovation centers continuously feed the shelves, while enterprises can bring their problems back to the science teams.
The institute reports measurable traction. Since operations began in 2025, the supermarket has accumulated 18,500 patent applications, and SIAT’s average research achievement conversion rate exceeded 29% in 2025. Technology-matching success rates improved by about 10 to 20 percentage points, while signed enterprise commission contracts totaled nearly 250 million yuan, according to SIAT. Huang Xiaohua, deputy executive director of the institute’s industrial development center, said that over the past five years an average of one buyer per day reached a cooperation agreement with SIAT, with contracts averaging about 1.4 million yuan.
One match moved into a more ambitious project. Shanghai Aipu Medical, which works in pain management, was looking for a non-invasive way to stimulate deep brain regions. In 2025, it found SIAT’s non-invasive brain modulation technology through the supermarket. In early 2026, the two sides formed a brain-computer interface joint team focused on temporal interference stimulation, which uses two high-frequency currents to target deep brain areas without opening the skull. The stated application areas include epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and mood disorders.
So what changes, concretely? A local company can find specialized research, testing capacity or a manufacturing path without starting from an empty search. In Chenzhou, a new-energy company found shared testing equipment within three days through a technology service supermarket, avoiding millions in equipment investment. In Jiangmen, a computer company signed within months on anti-counterfeit ink technology headed for mass production. The model is spreading to more than ten cities, but each displayed technology still depends on enterprise cooperation and further development before it reaches users.
