Advanced lung cancer: 10 years tumor-free after selenite and chemotherapy
The scan is the story: an advanced lung-cancer tumor that had resisted treatment disappeared after the patient received a treatment protocol involving selenite and chemotherapy in a study at Karolinska University Hospital and Karolinska Institutet. The patient remained tumor-free for 10 years, according to a case report published in Oncology and Therapy.
The researchers saw another signal during treatment. Levels of sPD-L1, a marker associated with tumors and the immune response, fell sharply. They say that drop may indicate selenite helped activate the immune system against the cancer. The report does not establish that mechanism, but it gives the team a measurable biological change to investigate alongside the tumor’s disappearance.
The personal outcome was far outside the expectation described by the researchers. Ola Brodin, an associate professor at Karolinska Institutet and senior consultant at Karolinska University Hospital, said the patient’s expected survival could have been a few months at most. The evidence remains a single case, however, so no firm conclusion about selenite’s effectiveness can yet be drawn.
So what does it change, concretely? For now, it gives researchers a lead for patients whose advanced cancers no longer respond to existing treatment, rather than a treatment that doctors can broadly offer. Mikael Björnstedt, who leads the work with Brodin, says the doses used were free of side effects and that selenium is inexpensive, potentially widening access if larger studies confirm the result.
That next step is already defined: the Karolinska group is planning a larger study. Until those results arrive, the 10-year tumor-free period is a notable result from one patient—not a proven therapy for lung cancer.
