Lab patch detects early kidney injury without refrigeration
A tiny patch, pressed into skin instead of a vein, is the latest attempt to find kidney damage before the body signals that anything is wrong. Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis, WashU Medicine and Texas A&M University report that their microneedle patch detected early signs of kidney injury in a laboratory study, using a biomarker called NGAL.
The patch samples interstitial fluid—the liquid found between skin cells—through microscopic needles. Its surface is coated with a metal-organic framework, or MOF, a material that forms a protective shell around antibodies designed to detect NGAL, an early marker of acute kidney injury. The team says the patch can capture and quantify these biomarkers quickly and safely without a conventional blood draw.
The practical breakthrough is less about the needle than the shelf life. The MOF coating preserved the antibodies’ biological function for up to four weeks at 50°C (122°F) without refrigeration. NGAL can rise in the blood within hours of a kidney injury and is already a clinically validated marker, but blood collection and cold-chain logistics have limited its usefulness outside conventional care settings.
And so what, concretely? If later studies confirm the findings, a patch that does not require refrigeration could make kidney-injury monitoring easier at home or at a point of care, including settings where laboratory transport and cold storage are difficult. That could shift some testing closer to patients, rather than making every measurement depend on a blood draw and refrigerated handling.
For now, the evidence is an early success from Srikanth Singamaneni’s lab, not a deployed diagnostic. The results were published in Advanced Materials, and the researchers describe home or remote monitoring as a future possibility; the study does not provide a clinical rollout date or independent real-world validation.
