Alteon Raises $2.5 Mn for Wind-Powered Aircraft Prototype
Less than a metre above the moving ocean, an aircraft from Bengaluru startup Alteon flew multiple consecutive loops on its own. The offshore test is the company’s latest step toward aircraft that can remain airborne for months, and it arrived as Alteon raised $2.5 Mn in pre-seed funding led by Lachy Groom, with participation from Together Fund.
The aircraft uses dynamic soaring: it draws on wind energy to stay aloft, following the same broad principle associated with albatross flight. Alteon is trying to make those manoeuvres autonomous close to the surface of a moving ocean, where precision and reliability matter as much as endurance. The company says the new funding will support research and development and the deployment of aircraft fleets over the ocean.
The test is a milestone, but it is not a demonstration of months-long flight. Alteon’s aircraft has completed an offshore flight test; its stated ambition is to build systems capable of staying airborne for more than a year. That gap defines the engineering challenge. The startup’s founder, Samay Sanghvi, began work on the radio-controlled technology in 2023, incorporated Alteon in 2025, and has since expanded the team to 20 people.
What would that change in practice? If Alteon reaches its target, persistent aircraft could provide continuous observation of the oceans and help authorities monitor activities such as illegal fishing and drug trafficking.
For now, the practical result is narrower but tangible: a wind-powered autonomous aircraft has performed repeated low-altitude manoeuvres over the sea. Alteon’s financing gives the team room to turn that flight behaviour into a more durable system, while the year-long objective remains an announced goal rather than an operating capability.
