Denmark completes 36-home 3D-printed student community
On the last building at Skovsporet in Holstebro, Denmark, the printer needed five days to complete its work. The first of the six buildings, each containing six apartments, had taken several weeks. Across the site, SAGA Space Architects, 3DCP and COBOD have completed 36 student homes, in a project the team calls Europe’s largest 3D-printed housing development.
The main structure came from a COBOD BOD3 printer. It extruded a cement-like mixture from a nozzle and built the walls layer by layer, while just three people were needed on site to monitor the process. That did not remove human construction work: builders returned to add roofs, doors, glass, furniture and everything else required to turn a concrete shell into a home.
Skovsporet is arranged as six single-story buildings around courtyards, gardens, walking paths and bicycle parking. The project preserved 90% of the trees already growing on the wooded site. Each apartment measures between 40 and 50 sq m and includes its own kitchen, study area, lounge, bathroom and sleeping area; wood and cork details soften the ribbed concrete left by the printing process.
And so what does it change, concretely? It moves 3D-printed construction from small prototypes to a completed residential community commissioned for affordable student housing. The clearest operational signal is the shorter printing time between the first and last buildings, although the project still took 12 months overall and conventional builders remained part of the process.
Students are expected to move into the homes in the coming weeks. SAGA says the project stayed within a strict social-housing cost framework, but no budget has been disclosed. The residences are therefore a completed demonstration at community scale, while the firm plans to apply what it learned to future projects.
