BMW delivers 2 million electric cars

A BMW i5 M60 xDrive left the Dingolfing plant in Germany before being handed over in August to a Spanish customer. It carries a symbolic number: 2 million fully electric cars delivered by BMW since 2013, the year of the i3’s commercial launch. The Bavarian automaker reached the milestone as it also began series production of the new i3.

The first million was reached in April 2024, reports Automobile Propre. The second therefore came a little more than two years later. Counting plug-in hybrids, BMW estimates that it has delivered around 3.5 million electrified vehicles since 2013. The lineup is no longer centered on a single model: BMW and MINI now offer electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles across several vehicle families.

The engine of this new phase is called Neue Klasse. The new iX3 already represents one-third of the brand’s electric vehicle sales and one-third of sales in the X3 family, according to Automobile Propre. BMW says that in Europe, electric vehicle sales rose 38% in the second quarter of 2026, reaching 81,445 units, while electric vehicles accounted for around 28% of the brand’s sales in the first half of the year. By comparison, ACEA put the European market at 20.7%.

So what does that mean in practice? For BMW, electric vehicles are no longer just an experiment driven by the i3: they have become a visible share of European sales and are taking hold in a strategic family such as the X3. The new iX3 already appears to be attracting one out of every two electric orders in the X3 family, while BMW says it is nearing 100,000 new orders for the model. The new i3 should extend this momentum, but its deliveries had been announced as imminent at the time of the announcements.

The figures remain those of the automaker, relayed by the cited media outlets, with no independent verification supplied here. The two accounts also place production of the new i3 in different locations: one mentions Munich, the other Dingolfing. What is established in both cases is the move to series production and the change in scale of BMW’s electric vehicle sales.
