BYD brings five-minute flash charging to mainstream sedans
BYD's new sedan push centers on a five-minute charging window. The newly launched Seal 06 and Qin MAX electric models can charge from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes, then reach 97% in 9 minutes, using BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and Flash Charging.
The cars sit firmly in the midsized sedan class. They are 4870 mm long, 1890 mm wide and 1495 mm tall, with the Seal 06 now 150 mm longer than its previous EV generation. The range stretches from 530 km in the base electric powertrain to 630 km in the top version. Power rises to 240 kW (322 hp), sent to the rear wheels, and the quickest version reaches 100 km/h in 5.9 s.
The charging system matters because BYD is building the network around it. The company says it has over 7000 flash charging stations operating in China and plans to pass 20,000 by the end of the year, with multiple charging points at each site. Some former gas stations are being converted into charging locations with convenience amenities, through partnerships including Sinopec, while further deployment is being developed with Shell and at KFC locations.
The Qin MAX and Seal 06 are also available as plug-in hybrids. Their battery-only ranges are 230 km and 320 km, but their maximum charging rates are lower, at 48 kW and 74 kW. BYD instead positions the range extender for long trips, quoting fuel economy of 2.59l/100km (~91 mpg) and total combined range of up to 2370 km (1472 miles). The slower charging rate may make owners less likely to fast-charge during road trips.
So what changes, concretely? For an EV driver in China, the combination of 630 km of range and a five-minute charging window could shorten road-trip charging stops, provided the growing Flash Charging network is available. The Qin MAX and Seal 06 mostly differ in styling, while the bigger technical split is between electric rear-wheel-drive models and front-wheel-drive plug-in hybrids. BYD says every version of its God’s Eye driver-assistance system already outperforms China’s new national standard. Differences in software and tuning still need to be assessed in driving.
