Bupa modernizes My Bupa app in approximately 60% less time

When an insurance customer opens an app in a stressful moment, the basic expectation is not novelty: it is that the screen works. Bupa says its My Bupa application now does so on a stronger footing after moving from Xamarin to native Swift and Kotlin, a modernization delivered in approximately 60% less time than would have been possible before AI.

The change reached the part of Bupa’s business that customers use to manage cover, update policy details, submit claims and check entitlements. The Asia-Pacific organization serves around seven million customers across health insurance and health services. Its Xamarin foundation had become a growing risk after Microsoft support ended sometime in 2024. Bupa kept customers protected with extended support, but Asifa Sherazi, its CIO of health insurance, described that as a bridge rather than a destination.

Bupa reports that its app rating rose from 3.7 to 4.7. The user-perceived crash rate fell by nearly 24 percentage points on Android and eight points on iOS. The project combined AI-assisted reverse engineering—understanding the existing system—with forward engineering of the new native application, according to Sherazi and Sanjeev Tripathi, senior vice president at Infosys.

And so what, concretely? For Bupa customers, the immediate promise is less friction when they need to handle insurance through their phone. For the company’s teams, the shorter migration effort could create more room to adapt instead of spending all their capacity defending an aging platform. Bupa also says the work helped employees surface problems earlier and preserve institutional knowledge.

The limits are clear. The approximately 60% timing comparison and the app metrics come from Bupa and Infosys, the partners discussing the project; no independent test is cited. The modernization is nevertheless already tied to an operating customer application, while the next ambition—more personalized and predictive AI-driven experiences—remains a direction for the modernized platform, not a result demonstrated here.
