China rolls out first unit of 14,000-ton ring crane still under assembly

On August 28, the first main unit of a giant ring crane rolled off a production line in China. XCMG, headquartered in Xuzhou, built it jointly with Beijing-based Sinopec Heavy Lifting & Transportation. The second unit is still to come, but once the two modules are integrated, the crane is expected to lift up to 14,000 tons—the capacity the companies associate with the world’s first machine of its kind.

That scale is aimed first at nuclear construction. XCMG says the crane will handle plant modules and other major equipment for two nuclear islands, completing lifts from a single position with the same boom configuration. The first main unit can also carry out lifting operations independently, according to the company, although only the completed two-part system will reach its full capacity.

The machine is not limited to nuclear sites. At conventional energy projects, it is designed to lift large towers and vessels as complete units instead of installing them section by section. That could reduce the risks linked to on-site assembly and pressure testing. Offshore wind is another intended use, as bigger turbines bring heavier components and greater lifting heights.

Its electrical system is part of the pitch. An electric direct-drive system converts electric power directly into motion, XCMG says, cutting energy consumption by more than 30 percent and raising operating efficiency by 20 percent. The manufacturer also says the system could lower fuel costs and carbon emissions, but these figures have not been independently tested in the material available here.

So what changes in practice? If the completed crane performs as designed, nuclear and energy builders could move larger modules in one lift rather than assemble them at the worksite, while wind developers could access heavier turbine components. The immediate reality is narrower: the second modular unit still has to be completed and integrated, so the full 14,000-ton capability is not yet in service. The project is still under assembly.
