Solidon3D makes downloaded 3D models fit without CAD

Drag an STL — a common 3D model file — from MakerWorld, Printables or Thingiverse, click a hole or wall, and change its number. That is the promise of Solidon3D, a desktop application built by Robert Schneider: turning a downloaded model into a part that fits without first mastering computer-aided design (CAD). The complete demo is available now and runs until 30 October 2026.

The application offers four paths to a printable part. Users can edit named features in an existing mesh, build from dimensions and prepared blocks such as nut seats or hinges, generate shapes from text or an image, or sculpt with six brushes. The first two routes are the precise ones. For generated meshes, Solidon3D says it provides no dimensional guarantees; that workflow also requires a local ComfyUI installation, a generator model and a strong graphics card.

The useful mechanism is the shared, non-destructive history. Each action stays editable, so changing a wall from 2.40 millimetres to 3.60 millimetres recalculates the hollowing, lid, holes and fits that follow it. The register contains 86 operations, 40 standard part sizes, 16 printer profiles and 9 ready example projects. An optional AI chat translates a sentence into the same operations used by the menus; the geometry is still computed by code, and each proposal can be undone.

Before the slicer — the software that turns a model into printer instructions — Solidon3D checks open edges, reversed normals, walls thinner than two extrusion widths and missing units. It also analyses overhangs, islands, bridge lengths and support volume, while an orientation search looks for a pose that leaves fewer of them. Fit settings come from a material profile and a calibration ladder. If a part exceeds the print bed, one operation can split it and add pins, holes and fits.

So what changes in practice? A person starting with someone else’s model can make a dimensional adjustment, inspect likely print problems and prepare the part before opening the slicer, without relying on repeated guesses. The application works without AI, an account or internet, stores projects locally and exports STL, 3MF, STEP, OBJ and PLY files. The boundary is clear: it prepares and analyses parts but does not replace the slicer, and no independent testing of its claims is reported here.

The demo is the full version rather than a feature-limited preview, but it stops launching after 30 October 2026. Existing exports remain usable in other programs, while native projects — ZIP files containing JSON and the editable history — need Solidon3D running for further editing; the source does not confirm what access will require after expiry. The one-time licence costs 69 EUR, including every update in the 1.x branch, and the listed price rises to 99 EUR after 31 January 2027.
