BMW-backed solar prototype claims a net-positive energy balance
A car that looks like a Minecraft build has just been asked to do something production vehicles rarely manage: make more energy than it uses. Called Luminetta, the BMW-sponsored Deep Orange 17 was built by graduate students at Clemson University’s International Center for Automotive Research in South Carolina as an experimental solar prototype.
The strange shape is deliberate. Its creators say the flat-sided body echoes the boxfish, using a form they believe can reduce drag while leaving more surface area for solar cells. More than 1,700 photovoltaic cells cover the exterior, including a shade-tolerant photovoltaic skin developed with Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems.
Weight is the other half of the equation. A skeletal chassis made with 3D-printed metal joints and lightweight composite panels brings the vehicle to 1,212 lb (550 kg), battery included. That extreme lightness is closer to a stripped-out specialist track car than a normal road vehicle, and the project does not provide technical details on speed, range or battery capacity.
Clemson’s mathematical simulations estimate that a typical 12-mile (20-km) daily commute consumes roughly 1.6 kWh. Parked in optimal sunlight, the solar array could harvest up to 5.7 kWh over the day—enough, on paper, to add 31 miles (50 km) of range while the vehicle sits outside. Those figures are simulations, not independent road-test results, and shade or several overcast days would weaken the calculation.
So, concretely, Luminetta is not a car buyers can order or a preview of a finished BMW. It is a two-year student-led demonstration of how far low mass, aerodynamic compromises and body-integrated solar power can push efficiency. Stephan Augustin, BMW’s project manager for research and new technologies, said the team had overcome “technical challenges and constraints” to bring the energy-positive vehicle to life. Its value may ultimately lie in which parts of that experiment—especially the solar skin—can survive the demands of future production cars.
