At the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show, Volkswagen launched in China its new ID. Era 5S: 89,900 yuan for the plug-in hybrid sedan from the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture. That is a limited-time offer, not the regular list price; the official entry price is 119,900 yuan, and five variants run to 149,900 yuan before incentives.

The 5S is the second model in the ID. Era family and its first sedan. Its positioning is unusually direct: a new-energy vehicle priced close to Volkswagen’s existing petrol sedans, including the Bora, Lavida and Sagitar, while also entering the territory of the BYD Seal 06, BYD Qin Plus and Geely Galaxy Starshine 6. For current Volkswagen sedan owners in China, the model offers an electrified route without leaving the brand.

Under the hood, an 80 kW 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine works with a 130 kW electric motor through a single-speed hybrid transmission. A 19.1 kWh LFP battery—lithium iron phosphate, a battery chemistry used here by Rept Battero Energy—provides 160 km of CLTC battery-only range. The car supports home AC charging and DC fast charging; the latter takes the battery from 30% to 80% in 15 minutes. Vehicle-to-load, or V2L, can supply up to 3.5 kW to external equipment.

The cabin follows the large-screen layout common in China’s new-energy market, with a 15.6-inch central display and an 8.8-inch instrument screen. The 5S is also Volkswagen’s first sedan globally to offer urban NOA, or navigation on autopilot. Its assisted-driving system supports highway and urban route guidance, automated parking, valet parking and cross-floor memory parking, with L2 capability offered on all but the base trim.

And so what, concretely? A buyer gets a sedan that can cover 160 km on the CLTC electric cycle, charge from 30% to 80% in 15 minutes, and still use petrol when needed, at a launch price near Volkswagen’s conventional compact sedans. The offer is aimed at mass-market Chinese buyers, not at a distant concept-car audience. But the limits are visible: the range figure is a CLTC rating, the launch discount is temporary, and the two published accounts disagree on fuel consumption with an empty battery, reporting 2.82 and 4.19 liters per 100 km.
