XPeng Robotaxi begins driverless road validation in Guangzhou
On August 27, Level 1, 2 and 3 public roads in Guangzhou opened a testing route for XPeng’s Robotaxi. XPeng announced that its autonomous taxis had obtained Guangzhou’s remote testing qualification for intelligent connected vehicles, allowing them to enter public roads without a safety operator in the driver’s seat. The project has moved from closed-course testing into a crucial stage of validation under real, complex traffic conditions.
What has changed is not the vehicle’s name, but the testing environment. Routes and variables are easier to control on a closed course, while public roads put the system into more complex real-world traffic. XPeng says its unified physical-world AI foundation has achieved a seamless progression from L2 to L4 capabilities: from assisted driving that requires the driver to remain continuously responsible to higher levels of autonomous driving, all advanced on the same technical foundation.
The absence of a safety operator in the driver’s seat does not mean the vehicle is operating without human oversight. Under the plan announced by XPeng, the vehicles will be remotely monitored through a cloud platform and can be taken over remotely when necessary. The remote testing qualification granted by Guangzhou is the prerequisite for this “vehicle operation, cloud supervision” model to enter public-road validation.
Specifically, this allows XPeng to evaluate its Robotaxi in road environments closer to real-world use, rather than demonstrating its capabilities only on closed courses. For urban passengers, what can be confirmed for now is that the testing area has expanded; whether the service can become stable will depend on the continuation of road validation and when XPeng announces more specific operating arrangements.
This progress remains at the road-validation stage. The report did not disclose the number of test vehicles, plans for passenger services or a timetable for commercialization. It therefore represents a technical milestone in the move from closed-course testing to public roads, not an autonomous taxi service that has already begun operating.
