Tesla prepares driverless Cybercab launch in Austin
In Austin, the next Tesla robotaxi will arrive without the two things drivers instinctively reach for: a steering wheel and pedals. The company is preparing to launch its two-seat Cybercab on public roads as soon as this month, beginning with employee rides before potentially adding the vehicles to its Robotaxi service. Tesla has tested the fully driverless version on private roads around its Texas campus since July.
The vehicle leaves no room for a passenger to recover from a mistake. Tesla says remote operators will be able to intervene during an emergency, and the company has started adding Starlink to Cybercabs to address concerns over signal strength and latency. Austin's first responders have also received specific training on how to move the vehicles after an incident. The launch calendar, however, can still change.
There is a sign that Tesla is trying to remove the onboard safety net before the Cybercab arrives. The crowdsourced Robotaxi Tracker recorded all 170 Austin rides it monitored over two weeks as unsupervised, involving 54 different cars. The tracker recently revised its data feeds, so some of the increase reflects better reporting, but its creator, Ethan McKanna, told The Verge that the shift in Austin itself appeared real. Tesla does not publish detailed fleet data.
The larger question is experience. Tesla's head of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, said the company's unsupervised robotaxis had driven 380,000 miles across six cities in two states. Waymo, which has operated a commercial robotaxi service since 2020, has driven over 220 million fully driverless miles on public roads. Tesla's Cybercab uses hardware and software similar to the Model Y robotaxis already in service, rather than a publicly demonstrated leap in autonomous capability. Its Full Self-Driving software also remains under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, while independent experts dispute Tesla's safety claims.
So what changes in practice? If the Austin test holds, Tesla would be moving from supervised or limited robotaxi operations toward a vehicle that depends entirely on automated driving and remote support. That could give employees and later passengers a purpose-built ride without traditional controls, but it would initially be a narrow demonstration rather than a proven large-scale network. Federal safety rules requiring features such as pedals and side mirrors also mean Tesla would need regulatory approval or an exemption before selling the Cybercab widely to the public.
