Norwegian station removes fuel pumps for high-power EV chargers
Across Europe, roadside fuel sites are being reshaped into charging and retail hubs. The shift is driven by European Union regulations, growing electric vehicle adoption and changing customer habits. Operators are combining charging hardware with software, renewable electricity and redesigned customer areas rather than simply replacing one pump with another.
Norway offers the clearest example in the sources. Plug-in electric vehicles account for more than 90 percent of new passenger car sales, and Circle K removed every petrol and diesel dispenser at its Alexander Kiellands Plass site in Oslo. The location now uses high-power direct-current chargers. At the Berger and Kongsbergsporten motorway stations, Circle K has installed modular satellite dispensers supplying up to 400 kilowatts, while former fuel areas are being used for seating, outdoor spaces and retail.
The infrastructure challenge differs by country. Norway’s electricity grid draws roughly 98 percent of its electricity from domestic hydropower, making load management a central engineering concern. In the Netherlands, where municipal grids are severely congested, Fastned and other operators are adding stationary batteries that draw electricity during low-demand periods and release it when several vehicles charge at once. Solar canopies and power purchase agreements linked to wind and solar installations are also part of the model described by the sources.
So what, concretely? Drivers without home garages could gain more places to charge in urban areas, including overnight or during lunch breaks. For operators, the longer stop changes the business model: fast charging can take 15 to 30 minutes, compared with three to five minutes for a typical fuel visit. That creates room for food, coffee, groceries, seating and wireless internet to become more important parts of the site.
The transition remains uneven and operationally demanding. The sources describe Oslo as an operational prototype, while other projects are conversions, dedicated hubs or infrastructure expansions. Grid congestion, simultaneous charging demand and the need to manage power across multiple vehicles remain practical constraints, even as the familiar petrol station becomes a quieter electric mobility venue.
