Cloudflare is building a wallet for automatic API payments by AI agents

An AI agent finds the right weather-data API, checks the prices—and then stops. The provider requires a subscription, while the payment service requires a credit card or a PayPal account. Cloudflare now wants to make it possible to get past this point: a monetization gateway and wallet system are intended to let agents pay for paid APIs themselves in the future.

The technical foundation is called x402, deriving its name from the HTTP status 402 Payment Required. A paid API tells the agent through the PAYMENT-REQUIRED header how much access costs and which blockchain networks it accepts. The agent resends the request with a cryptographically signed payment authorization. A response in the PAYMENT-RESPONSE field then reports whether the payment was successful. The process can take place without any further user interaction.

Cloudflare has already integrated x402 into its monetization gateway. Operators of APIs and other services can use it to set the price they charge for requests. The x402 project was admitted to the Linux Foundation at the beginning of the year; participants include Visa, Mastercard, Adyen, and Stripe. Stablecoins on the Ethereum Virtual Machine are currently the focus, while additional payment methods are expected to be supported in the future.

The wallet is intended as a control layer for agents. Users are supposed to be able to manage funds and assign virtual wallets to individual agents. Each of these sub-wallets can have its own budgets and policies. This limits the potential damage if an agent gets caught in a faulty loop or triggers too many paid requests.

So what does this change in concrete terms? An agent could not only find and call an API, but also purchase access to it independently—without the user having to obtain a token each time. This makes automated services more practical on a small scale, from retrieving data to handling other online tasks. The key caveat remains: Cloudflare’s wallet is not finished yet. For now, users can only reserve a Wallet Handle; this has not yet turned into a usable service.
