Exercise molecule may protect muscles weakened by type 2 diabetes
When muscle weakness and fatigue make exercise harder, a molecule released during physical activity may help break that loop. Researchers led by Professor Lee Roberts at the University of Leeds found that L-BAIBA helps muscles adapt, improve their endurance and resist damage associated with type 2 diabetes.
L-BAIBA — short for L-β-aminoisobutyric acid — acts as an exercise-induced signal. The study, published in Nature Communications, identifies it as a central regulator of the way muscle remodels and strengthens after training. The researchers linked the molecule to improved metabolic capacity, the ability of muscle to contract, and physical performance.
The mechanism described in the paper is the PGC1α-BAIBA-PPARδ axis, a chain of biological signals connecting exercise to changes inside muscle. In practical terms, the findings suggest that L-BAIBA helps translate the act of exercising into muscle that is better prepared to produce energy, contract and withstand fatigue. Roberts had previously studied the molecule’s role in metabolism and the fat-burning effects of exercise; the new work extends that picture to muscle repair and adaptation.
So what does this change, concretely? It could eventually lead to treatments aimed at preserving muscle function in people with type 2 diabetes, particularly those for whom weakness and fatigue make staying active difficult. That matters because exercise is already part of diabetes management, but the researchers have identified a possible way to make muscle more resistant to the damage that can stand in its way.
The distance between a biological signal and a treatment remains substantial. The study identifies a promising target, while Diabetes UK described the findings as being at an early stage. L-BAIBA is already available as a nutritional supplement, but this research does not establish that taking it is safe or effective as a treatment for diabetes; clinical benefit in people would still need to be demonstrated.
