For an adult outpatient, the blood draw could soon begin with a robot rather than hands-on needle work: a tourniquet tightens, the skin is prepared and a collection tube is filled while a trained phlebotomist supervises. The FDA has authorized Vitestro’s Aletta as the first standalone robotic device designed to draw blood in the United States.

Aletta does not simply hold a needle in place. It uses near-infrared light and Doppler ultrasound to locate a suitable vein, then carries out the remaining steps: inserting and disposing of the needle, changing collection tubes and applying a bandage. A phlebotomist initiates each session and responds if an issue arises.

The system is built around a staffing constraint as much as a mechanical one. One phlebotomist can oversee up to three Aletta devices simultaneously, although that person must later confirm that the tubes were collected in the correct order and are adequately full. The FDA authorization covers adult outpatients.

The clinical evidence offers a useful measure of where the device stands. Trials included people across varying health statuses, including patients who reported difficult vein access and patients with varying skin tones. Aletta’s successful blood-draw rates were comparable to or better than those of trained human phlebotomists, and device-related adverse events were uncommon and mild.

So what changes in practice? A phlebotomist could supervise several blood draws at once instead of performing each step directly, potentially helping outpatient services manage delays linked to a shortage of trained staff. The FDA authorization makes that supervised use possible; it does not mean Aletta operates without clinical oversight or that every blood draw will succeed.
