On a factory floor, the same inspection job can move from a large component to a hard-to-reach corner without changing the core system. FARO Creaform has launched the MetraSCAN BLACK2, a portable, metrology-grade optical 3D scanner that combines C-Track scanning, stand-alone scanning and probing in one metrology-grade system.

The architecture is the main change. C-Track mode is aimed at large parts; stand-alone mode handles confined or difficult-to-access areas; and, with the HandyPROBE, the system can add probing inspections to the same workflow. Compared with the MetraSCAN BLACK+ and BLACK+ Elite, the BLACK2 adds stand-alone scanning and supports parallel scanning and probing.

The scanner uses 46 blue laser lines and captures up to 2.8 million measurements per second. FARO Creaform says data acquisition is approximately 56% faster than in the previous generation. Its C-Track Flex Volume reaches 46.7 m³, a measurement volume intended to let manufacturers inspect larger parts with fewer setups.

The system also includes automatic shutter functionality, single-cable connectivity and setup assistance tools. FARO Creaform says the BLACK2 provides increased data acquisition speed and data density while simplifying connectivity and operation. Its accuracy is tested in ISO/IEC 17025-accredited calibration laboratories, with acceptance testing based on ISO 10360 and VDI/VDE 2634 Part 3.

For manufacturers, the concrete benefit is workflow flexibility: one portable metrology system can cover large-part scanning, difficult access points and probing rather than separating those tasks across different inspection arrangements. The reported speed and volume may reduce the number of setups, but the figures are manufacturer claims, and the source does not cite an independent test or a deployment at a customer site.
