Indian startup flight-tests a pharma-manufacturing satellite prototype
At a balloon facility in Hyderabad, a small satellite carried a factory designed to make pharmaceuticals away from Earth. Odisha-based startup Serendipity flight-tested the prototype system at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, including its autonomous pharmaceutical unit, Alchemy—testing a system designed to carry out critical steps in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The satellite is designed to operate about 400-500 km above Earth for a few weeks or months. Its re-entry systems are intended to bring it back to specific sites, where the molecules produced in orbit could be retrieved. Serendipity began operations last year. The test took place using a high-altitude balloon, while orbital operation remains a future step.
The attraction is microgravity: near-weightless conditions reduce convection, sedimentation and buoyancy. Those changes can allow crystals to form with greater uniformity in size and structure, a property that may matter for pharmaceutical manufacturing. The International Space Station has already hosted hundreds of experiments in biology, medicine, materials science and fluid physics; now companies are testing whether some of that work can become production.
India’s emerging field includes AnduraX, which is developing a reusable spaceplane able to remain in orbit for up to 90 days, support research and manufacturing, and return payloads with aircraft-like landings. Bengaluru-based Akashalabdhi is building inflatable modular space habitats. Both startups are backed by Riceberg Ventures’ KickSky Space Labs accelerator, while Ethereal Exploration Guild is working on a reusable rocket upper stage that pharmaceutical companies could use for in-orbit manufacturing and experiments.
For pharmaceutical companies, the practical promise is a new environment for protein crystallisation and other high-value biological processes, with samples potentially returned to Earth for analysis. But the near-term reality is narrower: Serendipity has flight-tested a prototype, not demonstrated routine orbital production. Anand estimates the pharmaceuticals-in-microgravity market at $768 Mn in 2024, rising to $3 Bn by 2033; those figures are market estimates, not proof that the technology is ready for routine production.
