SYNOPTICS has produced a 3x larger Yb:YLF crystal boule for laser research tied to inertial fusion energy. The Northrop Grumman subsidiary says parts of the crystal will go to Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, or DESY, in Germany, where researchers are developing high-energy laser systems.

Yb:YLF — ytterbium-doped yttrium lithium fluoride — is not the laser beam itself. It is the core material inside a solid-state laser, where it amplifies light until the system can produce a beam. Inertial confinement fusion needs very high-energy lasers, and those systems require large crystal boules with a wide usable aperture and high optical quality.

DESY’s IFuEL project — Inertial Fusion Energy Laser Development and HED Analytics — is working on a 200-Joule-class laser module as a possible building block for future fusion laser drivers. The consortium is addressing a central engineering problem: making high-energy laser systems efficient, scalable and reliable enough for repeated operation.

So what changes in practice? A larger, high-quality crystal gives laser engineers more room when designing the optical system they need to study inertial fusion energy. It could help DESY advance its laser technology, but it does not yet demonstrate fusion power or a commercial energy system. The crystal result comes from SYNOPTICS, and the module it is meant to support is still being developed.
