Volkswagen to launch electric ID. California Cruise in 2027

The mattress unfolds inside the cabin, the chairs come out of the van and the battery can run a coffee maker by the roadside. With the ID. California Cruise, Volkswagen is presenting its first 100% electric California in Düsseldorf, derived from the ID. Buzz. This production model is due to arrive in France at the beginning of 2027.

The automaker uses the ID. Buzz Pro platform, with two wheelbase lengths already available: 2,989 mm and 3,239 mm. Inside, the sleeping area for two people measures 2.03 m by 1.20 m and comes with a 9 cm folding mattress. Blackout blinds, ventilation grilles for the front windows, a table and folding chairs complete the equipment.

Volkswagen is not promising a full motorhome. There is no fixed kitchen or bathroom: the California Cruise remains a versatile leisure van. Its “California mode” interface nevertheless brings together control of the lighting, USB ports and stationary air conditioning. Depending on the battery level and outside conditions, the system can maintain a set temperature for 48 hours.

The battery also becomes a mobile power outlet. The V2L function — powering a device from the vehicle’s battery — supplies up to 2,000 W continuously and 3.6 kW at peak. Volkswagen specifically mentions a coffee maker, hot plate, cooler or charging electric bicycles. The California app will also be able to plan charging stops, while Plug & Charge will automatically start a session at compatible charging stations.

So what does this mean in practice? Fans of nights on the road will have an electric camper van derived from the ID. Buzz. French orders are due to open in autumn 2026, but the local price is not yet known: in Germany, the model will start at €60,761. The 48-hour air conditioning, meanwhile, will depend on the battery and the weather.
