A disc clicks into an Xbox, the game launches, and the console can remember it from then on. Microsoft’s new disc-to-digital program will let players claim a digital entitlement for most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games, with testing for Xbox Insiders starting August 31.

The mechanism is simple: insert the supported disc and launch the game once. After the entitlement is claimed, the title can be played digitally without inserting the disc again, as long as the owner or a member of the family account is logged in. Microsoft says the physical disc itself will continue to work exactly as before.

For supported titles, the entitlement can also provide access to Xbox Play Anywhere — playing on PC — and Xbox Cloud Gaming. That turns a physical purchase into a wider digital access point, although the program covers only supported games and Microsoft has not announced when the test will expand beyond Xbox Insiders.

So, concretely, owners of eligible games could leave the disc on a shelf while keeping access to the title on their console, and potentially on PC or through cloud gaming. The trade-off is ownership control: the fine print allows one revokable license per game disc, so selling or lending the disc could transfer that digital entitlement to another account when someone else inserts it into a console.
