BYD starts mass production of a 4D radar chip

More than 400 meters is the detection distance BYD is putting behind a new piece of automotive silicon. On Sept 2, 2026, BYD Semiconductor said it had begun mass production of its next-generation 4D millimeter-wave radar chip, extending the automaker’s push to develop key smart-driving components in-house.

The chip’s 4D capability addresses a specific weakness in conventional millimeter-wave radar. BYD says older systems lack elevation-angle data, limiting their ability to interpret complex urban roads. The new chip is built around BYD’s Xuanji A3 smart-driving chip and is intended for systems spanning Level 2 through Level 4, including highway navigation assistance, urban driving, automated parking and blind-spot monitoring.

The headline range comes with two other figures from BYD Semiconductor: 0.8 degrees of horizontal angular resolution and 0.05 meters of range resolution for parking applications. The single-chip design integrates 8 transmit channels and 8 receive channels. It was built on a 28-nanometer automotive-grade process and supports connections to widely used smart-driving chip platforms.

The move is already beyond a laboratory result: BYD says the radar chip has entered mass production, completed integration and tuning with Xuanji A3, and met the detection-performance requirements of Tier 1 module suppliers. The chip is designed to meet ISO 26262 ASIL B functional-safety requirements and AEC-Q100 automotive reliability requirements. BYD Semiconductor is the source of the performance figures, and the announcement does not provide an independent road test or identify a production vehicle using the chip.

So, concretely, the announcement points to a new mass-produced component for Tier 1 module suppliers and BYD’s smart-driving systems, without identifying a production vehicle using it. BYD says solutions built around the chip can support Level 2 through Level 4 driving applications. BYD plans to introduce the Xuanji A3 computing chip in a mass-produced Denza model in 2027; that announcement does not explicitly attach the radar chip to that vehicle.
