Two patients who first received kidneys from genetically engineered pigs have now received organs from human donors. eGenesis, one of a handful of biotech companies pursuing xenografts—transplants between species—announced the result. The two recipients are among its first patients to move from a genetically engineered pig kidney to a human donor organ.

The pressure behind the experiment is a shortage of human organs. Not everyone who needs one can get one, and many people die while waiting. Xenotransplantation offers a possible temporary stopgap: a pig kidney could support a patient before a human organ becomes available.
