Aptera solar EV delivers up to 4.75 kWh in testing

At Aptera’s headquarters in Carlsbad, California, a solar car sat in the sun while engineers watched the energy flow into its battery. On the day nobody touched it, the vehicle generated 4.23 kWh, enough for roughly 42 miles of driving on sunlight alone, according to measurements by TÜV Rheinland.

The German testing and certification firm ran three days of measurements with its own calibrated instruments. It recorded current, voltage, and power from the individual solar strings wrapped around Aptera’s curved body, then monitored the high-voltage line feeding the battery pack. That distinction matters: the result reflects energy reaching the battery after conversion losses, rather than the raw output listed for a solar panel.

The other two days tested more favorable arrangements. Repositioning the car once at solar noon produced 4.40 kWh, while raising the hatch to angle more solar cells toward the sun produced 4.75 kWh, or roughly 47 miles. Aptera calls that second setup “solar maxing.” The vehicle’s teardrop shape means the angle of its many solar cells changes as the sun moves, making the parked, untouched result the more useful test of everyday convenience.

The reason the numbers can translate into driving range is efficiency. Aptera targets 100 watt-hours per mile, while Electrek says a typical electric SUV uses about a tenth more energy. Solar panels on heavier cars have generally produced too little useful range to matter; Aptera’s lighter, more efficient design is intended to change that balance.

So what changes for drivers? For a US commuter averaging around 30 miles a day, Aptera says more than 40 miles of daily solar range could allow the car to go weeks without being plugged in. That is a practical promise, not yet a universal result: TÜV Rheinland’s measurements covered three days at one California site.

The vehicle is still approaching production. Aptera completed its first vehicle off a validation assembly line in March and is targeting its first 40 production vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2026 through its Launch Design manufacturing partnership. The solar result has independent backing, but the company still has to build and deliver those vehicles at scale.
