Chinese robot dogs tested for fires, toxic leaks and collapsed structures

When a fire, chemical leak or collapsed tunnel blocks the way, DEEP Robotics wants a machine to cross the threshold first. The Chinese startup is expanding tests of its X30 quadruped and Lynx M20 wheeled-legged robot for reconnaissance in hazardous areas, keeping emergency teams farther from the first unknowns.

The X30 is built to turn a dangerous interior into a live map. Its dual-spectrum camera and 3D LiDAR — laser-based depth sensing — can map spaces in real time, detect potential fire sources and monitor fire conditions. Multi-gas sensors can identify dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen chloride, giving command teams information without requiring them to enter contaminated areas.

The robot is not limited to looking. A water-cannon payload can use water or foam, reaching up to 60 meters with a flow rate of up to 40 liters per second. Other X30 units can carry hoses, air tanks and breaching tools, reducing repeated trips for firefighters working around hazards.

Communications are part of the system too. When cellular signals fail inside buildings, tunnels or underground spaces, the robots can form a self-organizing mesh network — a direct link between field units — so mapping, video and reconnaissance data can continue reaching command teams. The platforms also connect to a cloud-based command system for remote control, real-time mapping, AI-based recognition and point-cloud visualization.

So what changes in practice? Responders could inspect a burning, contaminated or unstable site before sending people inside, while the robots carry equipment or support firefighting. DEEP says the technology has been tested in high-rise fire drills, tunnel emergencies, chemical leaks, tanker fires and simulated structural collapses; the company also reports X30 deployments for underground power-tunnel inspections. The robots are therefore at a testing and early-deployment stage, not yet an independently validated replacement for emergency crews.
