2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid Wins on Range and Fuel Economy

In Edmunds’ test, the sporty 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid GR Sport continued on electric power for 58 miles before its battery ran out. Toyota estimates up to 54 miles for the main RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid trims and 48 miles for GR Sport; the Tucson’s EPA-rated electric range is 32 miles.

That gap matters because a plug-in hybrid uses its rechargeable battery first, then drives like a regular gas-powered hybrid once that electric range is gone. The EPA estimates up to 40 mpg in combined city and highway driving for the RAV4 afterward, against 35 mpg for the Tucson. Edmunds found the Toyota’s estimate accurate in real-world testing, while the Hyundai slightly exceeded its own estimate without closing the gap.

The Tucson’s strength is comfort. Its rear passengers get 41.3 inches of legroom, compared with 37.8 inches in the RAV4. The Hyundai also offers more comfortable front seats and a smoother ride over bumps, according to Edmunds’ editors. Plug-in-hybrid cargo space is nearly even: 33.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats for the Toyota versus 31.9 cubic feet for the Hyundai.

Technology is a draw. Both SUVs scored 9.7 out of 10 from Edmunds for infotainment usability and connectivity. The Tucson has an integrated navigation and voice-control system that does not require an internet connection, while some key Toyota functions require a subscription after the trial period. Hyundai includes a 12.3-inch center screen; Toyota offers 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch screens depending on trim.

So, concretely, the RAV4 is the clearer choice for drivers who can charge at home and put fuel savings first: Edmunds named it the winner on range and economy. The Tucson is more appealing for rear passengers and cabin comfort. Both start just over $42,000 and top out at around $50,000, but a comparably equipped RAV4 XSE can move beyond $52,000. Toyota also offers more plug-in-hybrid versions, while Hyundai counters with a higher-quality interior and stronger basic and powertrain warranty coverage.
