WhatsApp Launches In-App Bill Payments in India

At the top of WhatsApp’s home screen, a tap now opens a bill-payments hub. WhatsApp has launched in-app bill payments in India, giving users access to 22,722 billers—the providers behind the bills—across 30 categories without leaving the messaging app.

The feature is supported by the Bharat Connect network. Users can view past payments and upcoming bills, pay with their preferred method and manage multiple accounts under a single provider. That covers bills for home, office and family in one place.

WhatsApp also pre-fetches household bills into a summary. A biller previously paid through the feature appears on Payments Home for one-tap access, while the most-used categories surface automatically; a “see all” option opens the full list.

Arun Srinivas, managing director and country head of Meta in India, says the launch extends services people already use in WhatsApp, including phone recharges, metro-ticket bookings and citizen services through government chatbots. India’s digital-payments ecosystem has expanded rapidly over the years, driven by the mass adoption of UPI, growing smartphone penetration and an increasingly wide range of everyday transactions moving online.

Concretely, the change is less app switching for households that pay several bills through the same provider. They can keep home, office and family accounts together, check upcoming bills and return to previous billers from the same payment area. WhatsApp’s stated aim is to make the task as simple as sending a message; the feature’s immediate reach is still limited by its rollout schedule.

WhatsApp says Bill payments is gradually rolling out across India and will be available on all Android and iOS versions over the coming weeks. The announced coverage is therefore not yet simultaneous access for every user: availability will expand as the rollout proceeds.
