York Space Systems introduces a platform for Very Low Earth Orbit
At altitudes down to 200 kilometers, York Space Systems’ BANE mission demonstrated communications and attitude control in the difficult regime of Very Low Earth Orbit. The Denver-based company has now introduced LX/V-CLASS, a platform built for that orbit and available for customers to order.
VLEO — Very Low Earth Orbit — sits low enough for atmospheric drag to naturally clear debris from the surrounding environment. That same drag is the engineering challenge: spacecraft flying there must maintain their orbit and attitude much more aggressively than they would in higher orbits, where defunct hardware can linger for years. In exchange, operators can get higher-fidelity observation and a shorter signal path to the ground.
York is extending its existing platform model rather than designing an entirely new spacecraft. LX/V-CLASS is adapted from the company’s S-CLASS and LX-CLASS lines; customers add mission-specific payloads such as sensors or communications equipment. The design shares subsystems, interfaces, and York’s existing flight and ground software, and the company says it can be delivered within six to seven months of signing a contract.
The flight heritage matters because BANE was an earlier, separate mission. York says it validated core capabilities needed for sustained VLEO operations, including communication, maneuvering and attitude control above 200 kilometers. Michael Lajczok, York’s chief technology officer, said LX/V-CLASS turns those demonstrated capabilities into a platform customers can order. The company says its expansion is supported by more than $755 million in production and supply chain investment.
So, concretely, commercial and government customers can use a ready-made spacecraft structure for missions in a lower orbit, integrate their own payloads, and add VLEO to assets already operating in low Earth orbit, medium Earth orbit, geostationary orbit or cislunar space. York currently operates three constellations across five simultaneous missions. The six-to-seven-month delivery claim is the company’s estimate, and BANE’s results support the underlying capabilities without representing a customer mission on LX/V-CLASS itself.
