Saxony-Anhalt launches AIS.chat in schools

AIS.chat is available at schools in Saxony-Anhalt at the start of the new school year. The chatbot is intended to give teachers and students protected access to artificial intelligence in the classroom. Education Minister Jan Riedel (CDU) explicitly links the launch to the goal of ensuring that children not only know how to use AI but also recognize its limitations.

For teachers, access is tied to skills training. According to the education server, anyone already enabled for the state-run emuKI service does not have to complete the training again. In the classroom, AIS.chat can, for example, prepare lesson plans or adapt assignments to different learning levels. Students receive access to specific scenarios from their teacher; they do not need their own account or a real name.

The service is operated by FWU gGmbH, which developed AIS.chat as an open-source solution on behalf of the 16 federal states. The contract award and financing, including some funds from DigitalPakt, have repeatedly come under criticism. The service is accessed through VIDIS, a login service used nationwide, or in Saxony-Anhalt via the education server’s single sign-on. Language models from OpenAI, Meta and Mistral are among those available. The state has not yet disclosed which models it will actually enable.

The technical safeguard concerns data: According to FWU, the connected models run exclusively on servers within the EU. Usage data is neither shared with third parties nor used to train the underlying language models. The token budgets per teacher are being coordinated between FWU and the states. The former project name Telli has not been used since May 2026 for trademark reasons; Berlin officially launched AIS.chat as early as May 2026.

So what does this mean in practice? Teachers get a tool for preparation and differentiation, while students can try out AI in a school-supervised environment. The educational core, however, remains checking the answers: Riedel stresses that an answer can still be wrong even if it is convincingly worded, and that it does not replace independent thinking. Which models will be accessible in Saxony-Anhalt remains undecided; the token budgets per teacher are being coordinated between FWU and the states.
