Anemoi plans first Rotor Sail installation on a Maersk container ship

On the deck of an 8,700 twenty-foot-equivalent-unit Maersk container ship, cargo already occupies much of the available working space. That is where Anemoi Marine Technologies plans to install its Rotor Sail system, in what Maersk and Anemoi described as the first planned installation of Rotor Sails on a container vessel. The design is intended to minimize disruption to container handling.

Rotor Sails are tall spinning cylinders fitted to a ship’s deck. They use wind to generate forward thrust, while an automated system works alongside the main engine and reduces the fuel needed to propel the vessel. The sails do not replace the engine and can be used with different fuel types, making them an efficiency measure rather than an alternative propulsion system.

The clearest performance figure comes from Anemoi’s assessment of a bulk carrier fitted with three Rotor Sails. The company says fuel consumption fell by an average of 9.1 percent during the yearlong assessment, with savings reaching 21 percent on some voyages. Actual performance varies with vessel design, route and wind conditions, so the figures describe a range of operating conditions rather than a fixed saving for every ship.

The planned container-ship test also comes as Anemoi seeks closer ties with South Korean shipbuilders and shipping companies. In Seoul, Chief Commercial Officer Nick Contopoulos said several major Korean shipyards had approached Anemoi about jointly integrating the technology into vessels, though he declined to name them. He pointed to growing interest in wind-assisted propulsion and financial support from Korean banks for more efficient ships, while saying adoption had been conservative and depended on timing.

Concretely, shipowners could add wind assistance to an existing engine while continuing to choose among fuels such as liquefied natural gas, methanol and ammonia. For container operators, the Maersk installation will test whether that fuel-saving role can fit around the practical constraint that defines the ship’s deck: moving cargo efficiently. Broader adoption, especially in Korea, will depend on whether shipowners and shipbuilders see a sufficient commercial case.

Anemoi currently has 29 Rotor Sails in operation and more than 16 on order. The Maersk vessel is different—it is a planned installation, not an operating result—so its value will lie in showing how wind assistance performs on a container ship’s more crowded deck.
